Boat-Based Rescue

Learn to give quick and reliable help from the safety of your own boat.

Want to help your friends out while you are still in your boat? Need practice dealing with yard sales? Then this is the course for you. Designed specifically for those kayakers that want to refine the rescue skills that can be executed from a boat, we will focus on boat-to-boat rescues, hands-of-god technique, towing and pushing boats and a myriad of other rescue techniques. The proper use of a rescue PFD to connect and tow a boat to shore is also included. You will need Class III boating skills and a rescue PFD with a tow strap to maximize your learning from this course, come join us in this fun Rescue rodeo.

What's Included: Bring your own: boat, paddle, PFD, helmet, sprayskirt and rescue gear; however, NOC will have some specialty demo gear available to try out during the day.
Prerequisites: Intermediate II Kayak required skills

The course will include:

  • Skill development in whitewater
  • Swimming
  • Wading in whitewater
  • Rope throwing
  • Basic unpinning of boats.

We'll also discuss:

  • Crisis prevention
  • Crisis decision making
  • Recognition of river hazards
  • Avoidance of river hazards
  • Keeping rescuers safe.

This program is ideal when paired with our one day Wilderness First Aid for Boaters course.

We focus on your safety while teaching you how to manage unforeseen challenges on the water. Participants need to be competent paddlers in Class II-III rapids. If you are not sure how rapids are classified, visit the AW International Scale of River Difficulty page.
