Chile: The Patagonia Adventure Intermediate II / Advanced Kayak
Dates: Feb. 1-8, 2009 Cost: $2800
The Ultimate Adventure in the Ultimate Landscape
Begin by getting your feet wet on to the Rio Simpson as it flows from the grasslands of the Coihaique to the rainforest of the coastal region. It's a short shuttle to the black waters of the Rio Cisnes. (The water is actually so clear that it reflects the ubiquitous black moss which grows on submerged rocks). That afternoon we'll drive to the fjords to watch dolphins and seals play. The following day, we'll visit the crystalline glacier at Ventisquero, before heading south to paddle the cobalt-colored rapids of the Rio Figuero. We'll spend the night nestled above the Queulat glacial valley, preparing for the next two days on the piece-de-resistance of Southern Hemisphere paddling, the Rio Futaleufu. The turquoise Futa is revered for its epic haystacker wave trains and exhilarating rapids. We'll spend three days on this watery giant that's truly good to the last drop.
What our guests are saying: "This was my fifth international paddling trip. I've taken trips with NOC and other companies as well. They've all been really good trips, but this one was by far the best! I sure hope NOC will continue to do this trip." - Mary Hebrank
Named by the Spanish explorer, Magellan, this area was originally inhabited by the Mapuche Indians. The name "Patagonia" is derived from the Spanish word "patagones" and literally means, "big feet". To protect themselves from the extreme conditions of the region, the Mapuches wrapped their feet in skillfully sewn animal skins, making their feet seem disproportionately large. Though this race all but disappeared during the conquests of the 19th century, the intricate handiwork of the Mapuche artisan can still be observed in cities such as Coihaique, Temuco and Valdivia. Today, local industries depend on forest products, cereals and dairy farming.
A NOTE ON SKILL LEVELS: This trip may be suitable for both Level II Intermediate and Advanced paddlers. We have the ability and resources to tailor your experience to your needs but start by checking out the Paddling Skill Assessment in the prerequisites listed below.
