Costa Rica: Class III+ Week of Rivers

Costa Rica was optimistically named the "Rich Coast" by opportunists looking for gold and silver. Cost Rica may not be rich in these minerals, but it's certainly rich in whitewater. With plenty of rainfall and a rugged central mountain range separating the Pacific and Atlantic coasts, Costa Rica a tropical paradise for river runners.
Come experience Class III+ Pura Vida paddling on a variety of rivers including the beautiful Balsa, the creek-style Pejibaye, the big-water Sarapiqui and the exiting Toro. Wave trains, "wall-shots" and warm water define these Costa Rican runs, making it a "must do" whitewater destination.
After the first day on the water, we'll retreat to the hot springs at the base of the Arenal Volcano for some relaxation. From there, we'll head to Selva Verde, a private biological reserve for a few days on one of the best rivers in the world, the Rio Sarapiqui. This river has a section for everyone, but is known for its two largest rapids - Superman and Confusion. The takeout is right on the banks of your bungalow, so you'll be wrapped in dry clothes, swapping stories over "gorilla milks" in no time. We'll finish the week on the pristine Pegibaye River which features big boulder boofs and memorable Class III rapids.
*There are a variety of river choices in Costa Rica. We select each day's river based on water levels, group goals and skill level.
Accommodations were terrific and instructors were awesome. Loved the side trip to Tabacon Hot Springs! Great trip. I wanna go next year! —J. Paquette |
