| Students in Learn to Paddle programs: |
| - Have never been in a whitewater canoe or kayak, or |
| - Have paddled a whitewater kayak/canoe fewer than five times, or |
| - Are switching from another craft to a whitewater canoe/kayak. |

| INTERMEDIATE I |
| Students in Intermediate I programs: |
| - Paddle in a straight line on flatwater. |
| - Have paddled 5-10 times on whitewater in the past year. |
| - Understand and execute basic ferries, peel-outs and eddy turns. |
| - Are comfortable when the boat is not pointed downstream. |
| - Can self-rescue |
| Kayak-Specific Intermediate I skills: |
| - Ability to perform wet exits with ease |
| - Successful execution of a flatwater roll in the past year |

| INTERMEDIATE II |
| Students in Intermediate II programs: |
| - Paddle Class II rivers consistently and confidently. |
| - Have paddled Class III rapids at least five times in the past year. |
| - Are able to choose their own route through rapids/rivers. |
| - Perform ferries, peel-outs and eddy turns in Class II whitewater. |
| - Catch two-boat eddies, midstream. |
| - Want to improve technique through better body mechanics. |
| - Are able to maintain upright posture. |
| Kayak-Specific Intermediate II skills: |
| - Ability to roll consistently in Class II whitewater |
| - Execution of more than 10 combat rolls on Class II whitewater |
| Canoe-Specific Intermediate II skills: |
| - Ability to self-rescue regularly—including gear |
| - Ability to assist others with rescue |
| - Demonstrates use of off-side strokes |

| ADVANCED |
| Advanced students: |
| - Paddle Class III whitewater consistently and confidently. |
| - Have paddled Class IV rapids at least 10 times in the past year. |
| - Lead others down rapids/rivers in Class III whitewater |
| - Perform crisp ferries, peel-outs and eddy turns in Class III water. |
| - Catch one-boat eddies on Class III water. |
| - Attempt difficult moves that challenge and push personal limits. |
| - Are able to maintain upright posture. |
| Kayak-Specific Advanced skills: |
| - Ability to roll reliably on Class III whitewater |
| - Have performed more than 10 combat rolls in Class III water |
| - Can attempt hands and off-side rolls |
| Canoe-Specific Advanced skills: |
| - Ability to perform effective high and low braces |
| - Self-rescue with gear |
| - Assist others with rescue |
| - Perform off-side strokes proficiently |
