Due to a second rock slide in the Ocoee River Gorge, NOC is no longer recommending this alternative route. If the Ocoee River Gorge opens up before I-40 does, we will make note of it on this page. Thanks!

Take the Southern Route and Save on NOC Lodging

The three-month closing of a portion of I-40 between Tennesssee and North Carolina due to a rockslide has minimal impact on NOC's programs and offerings. We encourage thru-travelers to take advantage of the many scenic highways that surround NOC, south of Asheville. East-to-west travel between Nashville and Asheville can be detoured through Chattanooga and onto US 64/74, giving motorists a break from the Interstate. This alternative to I-40 passes through the Ocoee River and Nantahala River gorges, and is one of the most scenic drives in the mountains.

I-40 Southern Detour past NOC

While this southern route may take a bit longer, it's actually fewer miles than the detour recommended by the NC Department of Transportation. Travelers will be rewarded with spectacular views along two stretches of National Scenic By-Ways.

Southern Detour (red)
333 miles
Northern Detour (blue)
350 miles

NOC Mountain Cabins

According to visitnc.com, NC fall color is peaking. While the I-40 rockslide impacts travel time, all NC fall color hot spots are still open and accessible to visitors. You can check out more information from them by clicking here. NOC has also posted more information on our blog, which you can access by clicking here.
