Ocoee Trip Details
Ocoee Trip Facts
The Middle Ocoee is the most rafted section of whitewater in the country. Home of the 1996 Olympic whitewater events, the Upper Ocoee has seen its share of champions and weekend warriors alike! Until the mid-1970's, the riverbed was dry while its water was diverted to produce electrical power for the Tennessee Valley Authority. When the aging hydroelectric system broke down in 1976, water was released into the river while repairs were made. Paddlers soon discovered the fun and exciting rapids produced by the water release on the Ocoee. Since that time, NOC has been rafting the Middle Ocoee, having participated in the fight to secure recreational releases for decades to come. Water is released for recreational purposes at certain hours every Thursday-Monday, and in the remaining time, the water is utilized for generating electricity.
