Teens Summer School

Teens Kayaking/Photgraphy Camp

Kayaking and Photography with the New River Academy

NOC is partnering with New River Academy to offer a 3-week kayaking/photography camp this summer! Students take away high school course credits, in addition to new kayaking skills, photography experience and much more!

One-Time Camp: July 11-30, 2010

David Hughes, director of the New River Academy, provides a creative photo/media course for teen kayakers to learn the skills to take and publish photos. You will learn professional photography techniques including depth of field, mastering aperture and focal length, leading the eye and other composition skills. Students get a hands-on education shooting photos while kayaking and editing blogs off the water.

What level of kayaker can take this course?
We will be able to offer paddling instruction for intermediate and up kayakers during all phases of the on-water and photography sessions. If you've done a river roll, you're in!

How do I get school credit?
New River Academy is an accredited college preparatory boarding school. New River Academy employs the photo instructor, prepares the photo media curriculum and transfers transcripts to your school. Here are just a few of the benefits students will receive from their photo kayaking course:
• Earn a semester high school photography credit.
• Many New River Academy students are now published photographers.
• Allow your creative side to compose entertaining photos.
• Create a photo journal of your summer kayak camp to show family, friends and school.

"I would recommend this program to any parent who is truly interested in their child's education. I witnessed the structure and educational capabilities of David Hughes, and NRA, first hand. NRA's commitment to kayaking is an asset too, as Zack is now committed to discipline, group dynamics and safety. Zack has grown tremendously from his experience."—J.Webb

As a parent you will be proud of the educational and leadership component of this camp. New this year, parents can go online to view students' blog and photo projects!

Students Should Bring:

  • Digital single lens reflex (SLR) camera.
  • Laptop Computer if possible. NOC will have one or two computers available on a limited basis.
  • Their kayaking gear.
  • Enough clothes to last a week. NOC has coin-op washers and dryers on campus.
