Panama is one of the smallest countries in the world yet filled with some of the worlds most beautiful rain forests, abundant wildlife, and a rich cultural heritage. This tropical mountain paradise pleasantly surprises those who don’t expect to find so much beauty in such a small country. From cool mountain tops to tropical cloud forests and waterfall draped vistas Panama’s diversity does not disappoint. Clean modern cities and an abundant growth in the economy makes Panama one of the best countries to visit in Central and South America. Discover Panama’s many rivers and diverse cultures while getting a locals perspective with NOC’s Paddling School Instructor Dimas Pino.
We do most of our whitewater kayaking in the Chiriqui province, which has more than 35 rivers and creeks to choose from all within a few hours drive. Over 100 inches of rain fall annually making Chiriqui Province the ultimate paddler’s paradise during months of October and November. Panamas abundant class III and IV rivers have continuous whitewater making your trip full of excitement and new challenges. Paddling anywhere in the world can be fun and challenging but paddling in Panama is unforgettable.
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Panama City. Meet at the airport and spend an evening in Panama City. Day 2: Early flight to David, the provincial capital of Chiriqui and a warm up run on the Witches section of the Rio Chiriqui. This section is class III/IV with one large class IV rapid at the end. Day 3: Get up early and drive to the Rio Gariche, a continuous class III run, for a day filled with rapids through this beautiful, deep river gorge. Day 4: Head to the Rio Caldera in Boquete. For those looking for a challenge, put in above town and run a very continuous class IV+ creek. For those wanting to take it easy, put in further downstream on the class III-IV section. Day 5: Off to the Rio Chiriqui Viejo to do the Salsipuedes section. This is classic big water and continuous Class III river. Day 6: The final day of paddling will be on the class IV section of the lower Rio Los Valles. The section is short, but it is full of steep and challenging class IV boulder gardens. This final evening will be spent in Panama City. Day 7: Departure from Panama City. *Itinerary subject to change.
