SOLO Southeast's Premium Wilderness Medicine CourseTo become a Wilderness EMT, this SOLO Southeast Wilderness Medicine Course includes two components: Emergency Medical Technician—Basic (EMT-B- Intensive) Contact SOLO Southeast Director Jono Bryant at 828.488.7190 or 603.733.6636 for more details. This course consists of the standard Department of Transportation EMT curriculum integrated into an intensive three-week training program. This complete course includes classroom sessions during the day and practical skills labs in the evening. During weekends, we review clinical skills and you will participate in two five-hour clinicals at a local EMS service, emergency department or walk-in clinic. American Heart Association (AHA) CPR for the healthcare provider is included. This class gives you all the skills you need to take your state-registered EMT exam. Training as an EMT will help prepare you for a future career in Emergency Medical Services, the military or law enforcement, and is recommended for expedition and wilderness guides. We use experienced professionals from the industry to teach our classes and emphasize hands-on skills with a strong understanding of body systems and patient care. To further your skills and qualify as a Wilderness EMT we have added a five-day Wilderness Module to the course. This component is recommended for medical professionals who already have an advanced knowledge of patient care but want a better understanding of wilderness protocols and procedures that are significantly different from those taught in the emergency room. It focuses on emergency care when separated from definitive care by distance, time or circumstance
What is "Wilderness" Certification?Based on the Department of Transportation's First Responder and EMT curriculums, the WEMT program integrates wilderness and medical training. By definition, "wilderness" in wilderness emergency medicine is based on the concepts of: (1) Distance from traditional care and transport—usually one hour or more; (2) Environmental concerns such as severe weather, altitude, heat, cold and depth; (3) Improvisation of equipment so as to minimize weight; (4) Difficult or hazardous terrain. Prerequisites: Minimum age 18. Childhood vaccinations and Hep B series, TB test within six months of the course start date. High school diploma or GED. No felony convictions.
Wilderness Module for Medical ProfessionalsA 5-Day Bridge Course From the Street to the OutdoorsAcquire the skills needed to manage a wilderness emergency. The SOLO Wilderness Module is a 5-day program that upgrades current street first responders to the WFR level. EMTs, doctors, nurses, PAs and paramedics will receive Wilderness EMT (WEMT) certification upon completion. This is a fast paced and highly recommended course for medical professionals that already have an advanced knowledge of patient care and seek a better understanding of wilderness protocols and procedures. The focus is on learning the skills to improvise medical treatments when separated from definitive care by distance, time or circumstance. This course counts for 40 hours of continuing education.
CPR is not included in this course and is a prerequisite. Advanced Wilderness ModuleFollowing the significant success of our Wilderness EMT Module for medical professionals, this five-day module is for students who want to further their backcountry skills and prepare for disaster relief and medical missions. Taught by director of SOLO Southeast Jono Bryant this class is based on extensive in the field experience. Guest speakers include international expedition kayakers and world-class mountaineers. Topics include: working as an expedition medic, tactical medicine, marine bites and stings, dive medicine, desrert medicine, tropical medicine, introduction to swift water rescue, plants for wilderness medicine, survival skills for the wilderness medic, ALS in the backcountry, and an eight hour search and rescue scenario. This is our benchmark class, exploring new levels of wilderness medicine, expedition skills and backcountry rescue. You must have completed basic WEMT before applyying to AWEMT. This course counts for 40 hours of continuing education.
CPR is not included in this course and is a prerequisite. EMT-B RefresherAre you trying to recertify your EMT-Basic with your home state or the National Registry? This new course offers the 24hrs of refresher training required to do just that. This course is approved by the state of North Carolina and meets the DOT National Standard as an EMT Refresher. You will receive updates on airway management, patient assessment, medical, trauma, and behavior patients, and much more. After completing the course, you will be provided with an hourly breakdown of the course to submit to the National Registry for recertification. For those individuals needing additional training hours to maintain their certification, our specialized wilderness medicine courses are also recognized as Continuing Medical Education (CME). For more information about how to recertify your EMT-Basic credential, please go to the National Registry website at www.nremt.org. As the requirements to recertify vary from state to state, please check with your state’s office of EMS to verify that this course will qualify as continuing education.
