Prepare to be a Professional Outdoor Leader

This comprehensive 5-day course was specifically created for professional outdoor leaders and backcountry enthusiasts who want to learn skills that can be readily taught to others.  A great class for scout leaders, wilderness therapy instructors and summer camp program coordinators.  Participants will learn and utilize critical thinking and group management skills to organize, lead and teach wilderness skills to students.

The first three days will cover specific skill sets such as making percussion and friction fire, synthetic and natural shelter building, rescue signaling techniques, edible and medicinal plant recognition, Leave No Trace ethics, natural cordage making, open fire cooking techniques, flint knapping, finding and purifying water, recignizing different animal tracks, primitive fishing methods and navigation skills.  Days four and five will challenge students to plan, organize and lead a simulated expedition taking students into the Western North Carolina mountains, teaching and refining their newfound skills along the way.

There are no prerequisites for participation in this course.  Previous backcountry experience is highly recommended.  This class is scheduled to coincide with a two-day Wilderness First Aid course taught by SOLO Southeast Wilderness Medicine School, also located on the NOC campus.  These courses are both highly recommended and extremely practical for anyone seeking employment or currently working in the outdoor recreational community.  Following successful completion of the class you will receive certification from NOC's Wilderness Survival School.  The Wilderness First Aid course is certified through SOLO Southeast.

All coursework requires an average level of physical fitness. The private woodland where courses take place, Hemlock Ridge, is located approximately 1/4 mile from the main NOC campus.  It is a steep climb and those unaccustomed to hiking with a day pack under these conditions may find this moderately challenging.  Please contact the NOC Survival School if you would like more clarification.
