NOC Wilderness Survival School Workshops
Survival Skills WorkshopsThese one- and two-day workshops have no prerequisites and can be taken on their own or to compliment any class. Skills workshops that are scheduled throughout the year are introduction to friction fire, pressure flaking and flint knapping, plants for medicine and food, animal trapping, tracking and primitive fishing. The multi-skills workshop weekend includes elements of all four workshops. These can be scheduled as a private instruction course as well. Other subjects that can be scheduled for you or your facility include: fire pit and primitive cooking, map and compass skills, natural cordage and baskets, advanced shelter building and climate specific classes such as jungle, desert, mountain and sea survival. are primarily designed to expand on skills acquired in WSS coursework. Introduction to Friction Fire Learn to create fire without modern equipment or materials. This class focuses on early fire making concepts such as the fire plough, bow and hand drill, and natural tinder's. Students will harvest materials to manufacture their own bow drill and use this to make fire.
Flint Knapping and Pressure Flaking Learn the ancient art of lithic reduction or purposely breaking rocks to create tools with sharp edges. Students will learn the different tools, rocks and technology necessary to create their own projectile points and cutting tools without modern equipment. Participants will create a knife blade, which can then be attached to a handle during class.
Edible and Medicinal Plants One of the most popular classes, this is by no means a show and tell. Resident botanist Stephan Hart, professor at Southwestern Community College, teaches the fundamentals of plant identification and discusses various edible and medicinal uses for plants found in the United States. Learn what plants are high in vitamins and minerals, plants to help heal our bodies, make a cup of tea, or make a great salad.
Trapping, Tracking and Primitive Fishing The ability to recognize animal tracks and to track and trap wild game is a necessary skill for anyone in a long-term survival situation. Several different snares, traps and release mechanisms will be shown and their construction demonstrated. Students will then practice re-creating their own devices from naturally available materials. Correct placement will be discussed together with how to recognize game trails and track animals. Primitive fishing spears, hooks, traps and cordage will also be shown and discussed. No animals or fish will be trapped or caught during this class.
Survival Workshop Weekend For those who want to do it all at once, we are offering a full weekend of skill sessions. This class covers our most popular workshops; introduction to friction fire, flint knapping and pressure flaking, plants for medicine and food, trapping, tracking and primitive fishing.
Private Instruction For those who prefer to maximize their time with one-on-one instruction or for individuals or groups that have specific skills development in mind, we can customize a class for you. Or select from other skills workshops for a full-day of hands on instruction.
All coursework requires an average level of physical fitness. The private woodland where courses take place, Hemlock Ridge, is located approximately 1/4 mile from the main NOC campus. It is a steep climb and those unaccustomed to hiking with a day pack under these conditions may find this moderately challenging.
