Section IV's awe-inspiring views and rapids will thrill adventurous families and active adults seeking the highest white-knuckle adventure on the water. You'll experience the river in self-bailing rafts designed to optimize the Chattooga experience at any water level. As the water rises with increased rainfall, so does the difficulty and the thrill factor of this truly amazing whitewater river. Immortalized in the film Deliverance, Section IV of the Chattooga is the classic southeastern whitewater experience against which all others are measured.

The best part about the NOC experience on the Chattooga is that our guides take the time to show you the river's best kept secrets, like cooling off in a deep swimming hole or taking a walk underneath a cascading waterfall. Be prepared for the ride of your life through Seven-Foot Falls, the best place to grab some air. Take a jump off Ambush Rock into a deep, calm pool. Enjoy lunch served riverside, or sometimes beneath impressive, overhanging cliffs. These are the things your friends and family will talk about for years to come.

Just as memorable are the heart-pounding rapids, including our big finale at the famous Five Falls. Here, rafters are faced with five back-to-back Class IV-V rapids with names like Jawbone and Sock 'em Dog. It's an intense way to conclude a perfect day on the Chattooga River. Don't miss the digital photo show back at the outpost, where you can relive the drama and excitement of the day with new-found friends.

Seasonal Water Levels: The 59 miles of the Wild and Scenic Chattooga River comprise one of the largest free-flowing (not dam-controlled) stretches of river in the Southeast. Accordingly the river's level and character correlate with natural rainfall. High water and the highest thrill levels usually occur in spring and early summer, while late-season trips are more playful and scenic. Please note that the same river section can be very different at different water levels. Nonetheless, NOC's staff regards the Chattooga as the Southeast's exemplary wilderness river trip at all water levels.
