Pigeon Rapid Descriptions
Power House: Class III+ The Pigeon River wastes no time in getting started. Just 100 yards below the trip put-in you'll encounter one of the largest rapids of the day. Powerhouse is a boulder-garden style rapid with plenty of large waves and holes.
Jerry's Rock: Class II
Full of Water: Class II+ A large river-wide wave where your first photo of the day will be taken, so remember to smile!
Razor Rock: Class II
Aftershave: Class III After a close shave with razor rock upstream, you'll need some aftershave to cool you off. This river's got multiple waves that always serve up a splash.
Cottonball: Class II Don't let the name fool you. This seemingly benign rapid delivers a big bounce!
Veggematic: Class III "It slices, it dices, it makes a great julienned potato." Named after an 80's infomercial, this rapid was once a real hazard for rafts. The hazard was from sharp rocks displaced into the river during road construction, however flooding has moved the rocks around and they are no longer an issue. This one starts out with a large hydraulic at the top followed by a long series of standing waves. You definitely want to be smiling here because this is the site of your second photo of the day.
Tilt-a-Whirl: Class II
Snapdragon: Class III Snapdragon starts out with a two-foot drop followed by a nice sized wave, leading into a long train of waves that segue into the next rapid.
Rollercoaster: Class III This long rapid has some of the largest and best waves to punch through on the entire river. This is nature's version of a rollercoaster.
The Playground: Class II
Big Bend: Class II A long stretch of mellow Class II water, this is a great time to take in some magnificent mountain scenery, but don't relax too much. Lost Guide is just downstream.
Lost Guide: Class IV Your first Class IV of the day starts out with 100 yards of Class II/III waves and holes. As you near the end of the Class III stuff you'll notice a large rock in the middle of the river. Just to the right is a ledge that drops into a stout hydraulic. Punch through this hydraulic and line up for the big waves at the bottom.
Rooster Tail: Class II+ This is another long series of large standing waves. Watch out for one of the bottom one here. It's a soaker!
Duck & Run: Class II
Rock Garden: Class II
The Microwaves: Class II
Double Reactionary: Class III+ Two big, curling waves make this one of the more unique rapids of the day.
Superglue: Class III This is a great place to stop and surf the raft if time and the waiting line permit.
Accelerator: Class IV Your other Class IV of the day is a sloping six-foot, river-wide ledge. Punch through the sizeable waves and holes at the bottom or accelerate directly down the middle. The rapid then eases to some Class II and then ends in a large calm pool named Bomb's Lake.
Bomb's Lake: Class I A nice place to jump out of the raft and cool off for a bit, just in case you weren't soaking wet already.
Rock 'n Roll: Class II
Thread the Needle: Class II
